Whether or not you have an essential oil diffuser, there are plenty of other ways to use essential oils. These different ways to use essential oils can be sure, simple methods to boost your health at home, at work, or even in public. Here’s our list:

Top 10 Ways to Use Essential Oils Without Using a Diffuser

  1. Inhalation
  2. Topical Application
  3. Mix with Carrier Oil and Massage
  4. Bath
  5. Facial Mask
  6. Ingest or Drink
  7. Baking
  8. Diffuser Bracelet
  9. Spray Bottle
  10. Candle

Inhaling Essential Oils

Inhalation is probably the easiest way to use essential oils. Simply open the bottle and breathe in. Depending on the essential oil, this simple method can provide a variety of benefits ranging from relaxation and increased mood (Lavender Essential Oil) to headache or nausea relief (Peppermint Aromatherapy).

Applying Essential Oils Topically

Topical application is another easy way to use essential oils. Just apply a drop or two to the affected area and massage in. This can help provide a completely different range of benefits from fat loss and eyebrow growth (Castor Oil for Weight Loss & Best Castor Oil for Hair Growth) to pain relief and inflammation treatment (Rosemary Essential Oil).

It’s important to note that when it comes to many of these methods that don’t use a diffuser, we recommend trying out the essential oil on an unaffected area of skin first to make sure you don’t have an allergy or an adverse reaction.

Mixing Essential Oils with a Carrier Oil

For sensitive areas or some of the less gentle essential oils, we recommend trying the third method: mixing with a carrier oil. A carrier oil is an oil that you can dilute an essential oil with that generally has therapeutic properties as well. We like to recommend coconut oil or jojoba oil to boost the health of your hair or skin. If you can get a massage to go along with the carrier oil, the effects should be boosted even more!

Using Essential Oils in a Bath or Facial Mask

A bath or a facial mask are other great ways to incorporate essential oils into your skincare routine. For the bath, we recommend adding your favorite essential oil or blends and some epsom salt. For the facial mask, try adding Lavender Essential Oil to your favorite DIY recipe, or try one of our All-Natural Face Masks!

Ingesting, Drinking or Baking with Essential Oils

Ingest, drinking or using essential oils in baking are the methods that require the most safety and precaution. Most essential oils are safe for ingestion, drinking or baking, but not all! And the effects are very different, depending on which essential oil you use. For example, drinking a glass of water with 1-2 drops of peppermint essential oil can increase physical performance and mental clarity, while drinking a few drops of castor oil can act as a laxative or help induce labor. Be careful before drinking or ingesting essential oils!

The Diffuser Bracelet

The diffuser bracelet is a great way to take essential oils with you on-the-go. Generally made with lava rocks, the diffuser bracelet acts as an evaporative diffuser, absorbing essential oils and then slowly evaporating them over time. This can have similar, but more mild and longer-lasting effects than the inhalation method.

Using Essential Oils in a Spray Bottle

The spray bottle is a cost-effective method to use essential oils without a diffuser. You can add water and the essential oils and spray as you like, spreading the aroma, disinfecting surfaces and repelling insects. The spray bottle method can give you some of the same benefits as diffusing, but without as much effectiveness due to the water.

Essential Oil Infused Candles

Lastly, candles are a great way to enjoy essential oils without using a diffuser. If you like DIY projects, you can make your own at home and infuse them with the essential oil or blends of your choosing. If you’re looking for some good ones without the work, we have several Candles to choose from depending on your intended outcome.

As you’ve seen, there are many different benefits to using essential oils without a diffuser. But there is a reason that diffusers are the default medium for aromatherapy – they combine many of the benefits of the other methods into one!

A diffuser spreads the essential oil or essential oil blends throughout the air, allowing you to inhale them, but also allowing the essential oils to land on your skin, hair and face, providing many of the benefits of topical application simultaneously. The diffuser also accomplishes the duty of the spray bottle or essential oil-infused candle by freshening the air and repelling insects, while never requiring dilution or a carrier oil.

There are certain things that a diffuser can’t replace, like ingesting, baking or a face mask, but for most of the other benefits, a diffuser will work great. Most diffusers have timers and can provide the wonderful benefits of whichever essential oil (or blends) you choose for hours.

So without further ado, from our post about Essential Oil Diffuser Benefits, here are our top 10 benefits of diffusing essential oils:

These are just some general benefits you can get from diffusing essential oils. Which benefits you receive depend primarily on the essential oil or blends you are diffusing. A secondary factor into the benefits you receive from the essential oils is based off of the quality of the ingredients the essential oils are made from. Diffusing essential oils made from 100% natural, pure ingredients will have a significant positive impact on the quality of the benefits you receive.

For suggestions on which essential oils to diffuse for what purposes, check out our posts on Diffusing Lavender Essential Oil, Diffusing Rosemary Essential Oil, Using Peppermint Aromatherapy or our page on Spa Essential Oils for Relaxation.

Lavender essential oil is great for sleep and stress relief. Peppermint is great for the lungs, relieving headaches and improving physical and mental performance. Rosemary is great as an insect repellent, a stress reliever and a pain reliever.

Most essential oils have anti-inflammatory, antifungal and antibacterial properties that help to boost the immune system, disinfect your home or work from bacteria and mold, and help eliminate odors.

Now that you know the many potential benefits of diffusing essential oils in your home or work (and there’s many more than we’ve mentioned above), it’s time to discuss the different types of essential oil diffusers that are out there.

Types of Essential Oil Diffusers

As we discuss in the Complete Guide to Essential Oil Diffusers, there are four main types of Essential Oil Diffusers: the ultrasonic diffuser, the nebulizing diffuser, the evaporative diffuser and the heat diffuser.

We mentioned the evaporative diffuser earlier while talking about the diffuser bracelet. Evaporative diffusers use an absorbent surface to hold the essential oils and then release them into the air over time.

The most common diffuser is the ultrasonic diffuser. They require water and sometimes include a light. Ultrasonic diffusers are created with a vibrating disc used to make ultrasonic vibrations that agitate the water, dispersing the essential oil in a fine mist.

The simplest, and sometimes most convenient diffuser is the heat diffuser. Heat diffusers include essential oil burners and use a heat source to evaporate the essential oil into the air. Some can be as simple as a candle, while others, like the lamp ring diffuser, can be fitted onto a light so the essential oil or blends evaporate when the light is on.

Our favorite diffuser to use is the nebulizing diffuser. Nebulizing diffusers work without heat, water or evaporation. Instead, the nebulizing diffuser uses an atomizer to create a mist out of the essential oils. Since this method doesn’t use heat or water, it allows the essential oils to be delivered in their purest form.

How to Use Evaporative Diffusers

Evaporative diffusers come in several forms. Many are created to be simple and mobile. Like the diffuser bracelet, lava rocks, terracotta or other materials can be used in pendants or bracelets so you can take your essential oil diffuser with you. For these simpler designs, just apply a few drops of essential oil to the material, spread the oil evenly and let it settle.

Another example of an evaporative diffuser is our Ceramic Diffuser. The ceramic diffuser slowly diffuses the essential oil in whichever room you like. To use our ceramic diffuser, just remove the lid and half-fill the flower with your favorite essential oil or one of our 100% natural diffuser blends. Then just refill to half-way every 2-4 weeks!

How to Use Essential Oil Burners and Heat Diffusers

How to use essential oil burners is pretty simple! Just light a candle! Of course you have to add the water and essential oils first, but that’s it. Especially when using our Bulan Bintang Burner, aromatherapy seems pretty easy.

We mentioned earlier that there are a few other types of heat diffusers as well. While in their own way, essential oil candles count as heat diffusers, we’ll focus on lamp ring diffusers. Lamp ring diffusers can simply slip over a light bulb once you’ve applied the essential oils. Then all you have to do is turn on the light and the aromatherapy begins.

How to Use Ultrasonic Diffusers

All ultrasonic diffusers use water to disperse the essential oils so the first step will always be finding and filling the water reservoir. After that, add a few drops of your essential oil or oil blends of choice. Replace the top and any other parts. Plug in, turn on and enjoy!

How to Use Nebulizing Diffusers

As we might have mentioned, the nebulizing diffuser is our favorite! In our post about How to Use Nebulizing Diffusers, we used our Danau Satu Nebulizing Diffuser as an example. There are five easy steps, and remember, if you’re trying to add water somewhere, you might want to check the instructions again!

  1. Place the base on a flat surface
  2. Place the glass sphere on top of the base with the glass tube going into the white part of the base and the directional spout on the top
  3. Plug in the power cable (you can use USB port or the wall adapter!)
  4. Lift up the spout and drop a few drops of essential oil inside the glass sphere
  5. Twist the knob to turn on and adjust

That’s it! After that, you can sit back, relax and enjoy the aroma of your favorite essential oil or blends.
